Lost in Translation (2003) by Sofia Coppola. A realistic take on relationships, commitment, attention and what people want.

As I go through my classes at @lightsfilmschool I had the chance to read the script for this movie, and that was a really really interesting experience for me.

The film takes plc in Modern Japan as Bob, an actor, who is fed up with his wife, mundane life and is frustrated with this new ad that he is shooting meets Charlotte, a girl who is in her early 20’s who gets married too soon. Both of them have a similar struggle of commitment and the fear/frustration that comes with it. They both find company in each other as they go through their time in Japan.

What I loved about this movie was how truthful it tried to be about people and their wants. One of the biggest shocks for me, throughout the film is the fact that there was no sexual act that happened between the two characters we follow. That surprised me a lot.

Throughout the film we see their fears, as they enjoy each others company, they both realize the bitter truth that they cannot be together.

Sometimes experiences like this will stick with us, and make us a better person, and that as a whole will make us react less. Coming to an understanding and acknowledging the truth.

This is not an affair, or something that is going to last. It was just two people finding each other, both lost in translation…..
